I really love history, but I don't think I've read any before that was this well written and engrossing. Tom Holland has a gift for storytelling matched by few that really puts you in the thick of things. Even more impressive is the way he crafted the narrative by exclusively relying on primary sources. It really makes me want to read the classics. Aside from learning so much about Roman history, I also was constantly drawing mental parallels between the book and current political developments, as I'm sure many others have. Highly recommended to people who like history, but also to those less inclined because this book is far from boring. I like historical writing that is fast-paced, hard to put down, and memorable; this book is not that. Although Tom Holland seems to have a lot of dedicated followers, his books are not as remarkable as the reviews indicate. The style tends to be quite flowery, and I found I sometimes had to re-read sentences, which really slowed down the pace of reading this book. For the best quality narrative historical writing, I much prefer the works of Robert K. Massie.This book is also not a "big picture" book. I would not recommend it as an introduction to the history of Ancient Rome, because it limits itself to a short time period in the late Republic. It would be a better book if it provided the broader context of Ancient Rome before jumping into its sometimes confusing narrative.On the positive side, "Rubicon" provides rich details on a very important time period in Ancient Roman history. If you are fascinated by Marius, Sulla, Lucullus, Spartacus, Caesar and their contemporaries, this book will interest you.
